Juneteenth 2026 Events in Galveston

Galveston, Texas is the birthplace of Juneteenth — and the only place in the country where the holiday was born from the actual moment of liberation. On June 19, 1865, Union Major General Gordon Granger landed at Ashton Villa and read General Order No. 3 aloud to the people of Galveston, declaring that "all slaves are free." That day, more than two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation took legal effect, ended chattel slavery in the last Confederate state. Galveston Juneteenth 2026 commemorates the 161st anniversary of that moment with a slate of events anchored at Ashton Villa, Reedy Chapel AME Church (the site of the first organized Juneteenth celebration in 1866), and the Old Central Cultural Center — alongside parades down Avenue L, the Al Edwards "Father of Juneteenth" prayer breakfast, and the Juneteenth Legacy Project's Reflections of Emancipation mural unveiling. If you only attend one Juneteenth in your lifetime, attend it here. The events listed below are the city's confirmed 2026 celebrations; they fill the weekend of June 19–21 and most are free and open to the public.
