Soul of a People: A Juneteenth Celebration of Black Music

Missouri-based Center for Authentic Listening & Learning (C.A.L.L.) will host their Annual Juneteenth brunch June 19th from 11 AM to 2 PM. The brunch will feature an in-person panel discussion titled β€œFrom the Hospital to the Land: Reclaiming Wellness on Missouri’s First Black Resort.” The event is their annual fundraiser and supports their initiatives for the historic 244-acres of land at Lake Placid, MO. In addition to the discussion, the event will include a live jazz ensemble performance. The conversation will explore how Black communities have historically created spaces of refuge, restoration, and collective healing in response to racialized systems that have shaped health and well-being. Arianna Blakemore, Dr. Kaleea Lewis, and Dr. Will Ross are the featured panelists.

The Mister Juneteenth Scholarship Pageant at the University of Missouri-St. Louis showcases Black male high school graduates from across the St. Louis region competing for college scholarships at the Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center. Held in the Desmond and Mary Ann Lee Theater on the UMSL campus, the program features contestants in formal wear, talent, and oratory rounds, with judging that weighs academic achievement, community service, and personal vision. Anchored at UMSL, a public research university serving one of the most diverse student bodies in the state, the pageant intentionally inverts the historical exclusion of Black men from scholarship pageantry and creates a public stage for celebrating Black male leadership and aspiration during Juneteenth weekend. The event culminates in scholarship awards and a coronation.
