Fort Monroe Juneteenth Day & Sail250 Virginia Parade of Sail
About This Event
Fort Monroe National Monument — the site where in 1619 the first enslaved Africans arrived in English North America and where, in 1861, three self-emancipated men sought refuge and helped shape Union 'contraband' policy — hosts a day-long Juneteenth celebration of history, culture and freedom on June 19, 2026. The day coincides with the Sail250 Virginia Parade of Sail bringing international tall ships into Hampton Roads.

What to expect at a Juneteenth cultural program
Cultural programs go deeper than festivals — think curated exhibits, panel discussions, gallery talks, dance performances, oral history projects, and film screenings. They’re generally shorter (1 to 3 hours) and ticketed venues often waive admission for Juneteenth. Dress is typically smart casual. These programs are excellent first Juneteenth experiences for visitors who want context before joining a parade or block party.
