Sankofa 15th Annual Remembrance Ceremony at Outlook Beach
About This Event
The 15th annual Sankofa Remembrance Ceremony gathers at Outlook Beach at Fort Monroe — yards from where the first Africans landed at Point Comfort in 1619 — to honor the millions of African men, women, and children who perished during the Middle Passage. The 11 a.m.–2 p.m. program includes a ceremonial walk to the water, libations, drumming, poetry, theatrical performances, and a closing remembrance. Free and open to the public; bring a chair and water.

Cultural programs go deeper than festivals — think curated exhibits, panel discussions, gallery talks, dance performances, oral history projects, and film screenings. They’re generally shorter (1 to 3 hours) and ticketed venues often waive admission for Juneteenth. Dress is typically smart casual. These programs are excellent first Juneteenth experiences for visitors who want context before joining a parade or block party.
