Celebrate Juneteenth & Hampton VA250 Sail at Fort Monroe
About This Event
Hampton's signature Juneteenth observance unfolds at Fort Monroe β the 'Freedom's Fortress' that sheltered self-emancipated people during the Civil War and stands a stone's throw from the site where the first Africans arrived in English North America in 1619. Held in conjunction with the Sail250 Virginia Parade of Sail (tall ships and military vessels processing through Hampton Roads), the day-long celebration runs roughly 9 a.m.β6 p.m. and features cultural displays, food, family activities, and a headlining concert with Musiq Soulchild and Amerie. Free and open to the public.

Juneteenth festivals are the heart of the holiday β multi-hour, family-friendly, and densely programmed. Expect a main stage with rotating performances, vendor rows featuring Black-owned businesses, food trucks heavy on barbecue and Southern cuisine, kidsβ zones with face painting and bounce houses, history exhibits or living-history performers, and community resource booths. Plan to spend two to four hours if you want to see the lineup; longer if youβre bringing children. Entry is free at most festivals, but tipping vendors and supporting local businesses is part of the day.
