About This Event

Hosted at the Mattatuck Museum and presented by the Waterbury Black Giving Circle, the annual Juneteenth Oratorical Contest invites Waterbury-area students to present original speeches about the importance of Black history and Juneteenth. Students perform before a panel of local judges, with winners recognized for speeches that honor Black history heroes, elevate Black voices, and celebrate Black joy and freedom. First-place winners go on to perform their speeches at the Waterbury Black Giving Circle's main Juneteenth Celebration in June. The contest is free and open to the public to attend, and serves as both a youth development program and a community kickoff to Waterbury's Juneteenth season.
