Contextualizing Juneteenth in Maryland: Emancipation or Freedom?
About This Event
The Maryland Center for History and Culture presents Contextualizing Juneteenth in Maryland: Emancipation or Freedom?, a public program that explores Maryland's distinctive emancipation story, including the November 1, 1864 ratification of the state's new constitution that abolished slavery more than two years before Juneteenth and seven months before federal troops enforced emancipation in Texas. Drawing on the MCHC collections, including original documents, photographs, and material culture from enslaved and free Black Marylanders, historians and curators unpack how Juneteenth fits within and complicates the Free State's narrative. The hybrid program is offered in person at the MCHC's Mount Vernon campus and streamed online, and is paired with curator-led tours of related exhibitions. The museum itself is closed to walk-in visitors on June 19.
