Voices of History Street Fair at the National Great Blacks In Wax Museum
About This Event
The National Great Blacks In Wax Museum hosts its annual Voices of History Street Fair, a free summer celebration of community arts, culture, and health that coincides with both the Juneteenth holiday and the museum's anniversary. The block-party-style event closes a stretch of East North Avenue for live music, spoken-word performances, dance, vendors, youth programming, and on-site health and wellness resources. The museum stays open for walk-in tours throughout the day, allowing guests to experience more than 150 life-sized wax figures of African American historical figures, including the newer figure of Henrietta Lacks. Founded by Dr. Elmer and Joanne Martin in 1983, the museum is the first wax museum dedicated to African American history in the United States.

Cultural programs go deeper than festivals — think curated exhibits, panel discussions, gallery talks, dance performances, oral history projects, and film screenings. They’re generally shorter (1 to 3 hours) and ticketed venues often waive admission for Juneteenth. Dress is typically smart casual. These programs are excellent first Juneteenth experiences for visitors who want context before joining a parade or block party.
